With its tropical flavor that has been described as a combination of pear, strawberry, pineapple and even banana, guava is not just delicious — it is also packed with nutrients.
In fact, a guava is richer – four times! – in vitamin C than an orange. A guava will also provide you with vitamin A, niacin, vitamin B-6, folate, thiamine and riboflavin. Guavas are also rich in manganese, which helps you to absorb nutrients from the other foods you eat. It also contains about the same amount of potassium as a banana.
Guavas also have a high level of pectin, a soluble dietary fiber found in fruits that allows you to reduce your blood cholesterol level. Simply said, pectin makes you healthier. Because guavas contain a high level of pectin – a natural thickening agent – they are great for making candies, preserves, jellies, jams and marmalades.
In this recipe, the beautiful pink fruit is lightly poached and paired with milk and sugar. For extra nutrients, add moringa powder, which elevates this dessert a notch higher. Its slight bitterness complements the sweetness of the milk-sugar duo. The sauce is thicker, with the tantalizing color of moringa pervading it. Adjust sugar to taste.
