Harouna Maiga, Professor of Animal Sciences at the University of Minnesota-Crookston, was born in Ansongo, GAO region of northern Mali, West Africa. Maiga received his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science (1979) from the Polytechnic Rural Institute of Katibougou, Mali and worked for the Malian Office of Livestock Development and Meat Production. In 1986 he obtained his Master of Science in Animal Sciences with a forages production emphasis at the University of Maine, Orono campus.

Upon completion of his degree, he returned home and was employed by the Malian Ministry of Agriculture and held the position of Livestock Development and Extension Specialist. He was involved with the studies, design, implementation, and evaluation of livestock development projects. In 1994 he completed a second M.S. degree in Applied Economics and a Ph.D. degree in Animal Science with Dairy emphasis from the South Dakota State University, Brookings and was then employed by the University of Minnesota Extension Service as Livestock Specialist and Extension Agent.

In January 2001 he joined the University of Minnesota, Crookston and teaches courses in Animal Science including livestock facilities and environmental systems, feeds and feeding, applied animal nutrition, dairy production, animal reproduction/artificial insemination & lactation, forages production and management, animal systems management, and international agriculture production and marketing systems with focus on France and Mali Agriculture production systems. His research interests are Applied Animal Nutrition with emphasis on forages and agricultural by-product feeds utilization in ruminants’ diet, production of cassava leaves hay and silage for sheep and goats feeding in Mali.

During the last few years, he served as a consultant for the Transfer of Knowledge Through Expatriates Nationals (TOKTEN) Project in Mali with the specific charge of teaching agricultural production courses to university students and to provide technical expertise to the Center for Expertise and Applied Research for Development of the University of Ségou.

His goal and desire in this project is to expand specialized training in Sheep and Goats nutrition and herd management for the benefit of agricultural professionals, students and farmers.
